ISLAM 2000
Dr. Murad Hofmann

Where the Muslim World is at the threshold of the 21st century and what it takes to make Islam the relevant religion of that century worldwide.

Murad Wilfried Hofmann was born into a Catholic family on July 6, 1931 in Aschaffenburg, Germany, where he spent the war years, experiencing strategic bombing and military occupations. His university studies began in 1950 at Union College in Schenectady, New York. He completed his studies of German law with a doctorate in jurisprudence at Munich University (1957) and his bar exam. His subsequent studies of American law led to a master's degree at Harvard Law School (1960).

From 1961 until 1994, he was a member of the German foreign service and a specialist on issues of nuclear defense. He also served as Director of Information for NATO at Brussels (1983-87), Ambassador to Algeria (1987-90), and Ambassador to Morocco (1990-94).

In 1980, the author embraced Islam, performing 'umrah in 1982 and hajj in 1992. In 1985, he published the German version of his Diary of a German Muslim (2d ed., Cologne: 1990) which is available in Arabic (Yawmiyat Muslim Almani [Cairo: al Ahram 1993]), English (Diary of a German Muslim [Cologne: 1987]), and French Journal d'un Musulman allemand [Alger: 1990; Rabat: 1993]).

His book, Islam: The Alternative, when appearing in German in 1992 (2d. ed., Munich: 1993) caused a public scandal. Mr. Hofmann was viciously attacked as a "fundamentalist" by leftist and feminist circles in the German media and parliament. This book is also available in Arabic (al Islam ka Badil [Munich and Kuwait: 1993]) and English (Islam: The Alternative [Reading: Garnet 1993; and amana publications 1997]).

Mr. Hofmann has a son from his late (American) first wife. Upon retirement, he took up residence in Istanbul, home of his Turkish wife.

ISLAM
By: Dr. Isma'il R. Al Faruqi

A primer for understanding the religion and culture of Islam.

The second half of the twentieth century has brought about a new awareness of Islam and Muslims to the inhabitants of Europe and North America. Due to our increased political, economic, and social contacts with Muslims, it is becoming ever more important - nay, crucial - for us to understand the religion and culture of Islam.

Such an understanding is not easy, author Ismail R. al Faruqi points out, for Western thinking is clouded by prejudices about Islam, its culture, and its adherents. It is time to launch a new effort that will seek to bridge the gulf separating westerners and Muslims. Professor al Faruqi's book is an invitation to the reader to attempt such an understanding.

This volume seeks to portray the beliefs, practices, institutions, and history of Islam from the inside - as its adherents see them. The seven chapters explore these subjects: (1) who are the Muslims and what are their basic beliefs; (2) the five pillars, or basic tenets, of Islam; (3) the prophethood of Muhammad and major Muslim celebrations; (4,5,6) the social, economic, and political ideals and institutions of Islam; and (7) the effect of Islamic beliefs on artistic expression and an overview of Islamic history.

Growth of Islamic Thought in North America:
FOCUS ON ISMA'IL R. AL FARUQI
By Dr. Muhammad Shafiq

I read your manuscript carefully and it does something very well. The affection, passion, idealism, intellectual attainments of Dr. al Faruqi come through clearly and impressively. Your labor of love should be shared with others. I wish you success in your efforts to publish this manuscript.

Ralph R. Sisson, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Communication

Brockport, New York

It is refreshing to find a contemporary Muslim scholar who, in addition to undertaking a realistic analysis of why the Muslim world has fallen so low, actually offers achievable and practical solutions. Dr. al Faruqi was such a scholar, and it is our great misfortune that he and his wife were murdered during the prime of their lives. It is my hope that this valuable work will inspire others to study and use al Faruqi's ideas and proposals to solve our many problems. I would like to thank Dr. Shafiq for bringing this great Muslim scholar and individual to our attention once again.

Strategies and Structures for Presenting World History
with Islam and Muslim History as a Case Study
Council on Islamic Education Report:
Susan Douglass

This volume is really two books in one - an exposition and a resource book. It begins with an extensive discussion on teaching world history in survey courses based on the experience of a varied group of professional educators. Arguing for a truly universal perspective in world history, the Council on Islamic Education analyses why man curricula and textbooks are not effective tools for global education. While coverage has become more inclusive, the traditional structure has become a liability. Structural problems are identified that inhibit integration of new historical research, hinder comprehension and retention by students, and fail to cultivate coveted critical thinking skills. Recent trends in curriculum, including the new National Standards for World History, raise expectations for excellence in social studies education and promise a more effective American workforce and civic climate.

Lest the book join the grim chorus of works bemoaning the state of education in the U.S. this volume offers resources for solutions and a variety of options and insights on how to teach about Islam, criteria for selecting components of the presentation, and outlines, modules and activities for constructing a rich, varied survey of Muslim history that is integrated into the total world history course. Teachers, curriculum writers and designers of instructional materials will find in this book a rich vein of information and ideas for improving classroom study of history and increasing the flow of knowledge from higher levels of academic discourse into the schools.

The impressive group of historians and education professionals affiliated with the Council on Islamic Education has contributed substantially to this resource document, having assisted in the project's planning and design, and provided specific input from their various fields of expertise in history and the social sciences.

Trialogue of Abrahamic Faiths
Edited by Isma'il Raji al Faruqi

This book, Trialogue of the Abrahamic Faiths, edited by the late Dr. by Isma'il Raji al Faruqi is certain to be hailed as a historic milestone in Muslim?Christian?Jewish dialogue. Perhaps not since the early Middle Ages when the grand courts of Damascus, Baghdad, and Qurtubah (Cordova) witnessed numerous dialogues and debates between the adherents of these three Abrahamic faiths, has there been such a successful effort made by religious scholars to communicate with one another on matters of faith and understanding.

This book, readers may note, goes beyond the modern?day ostensible studies in comparative religion, and each of the contributing scholars evinces an appreciation and more?than?cursory knowledge of all three faiths.

The authors take up three major topics: The Other Faiths, The Nation?State as a Form of Social Organization, and The Faith?Community as a Transnational Actor for justice and Peace. Jewish, Christian, and Muslim contributors offer their respective enlightened views on the subjects discussed.

Journey to Makkah
By Dr. Murad Hofmann

Journey to Makkah, already available in German and Arabic, is much more than an account of the author's pilgrimages to the holy places of Islam, Makkah and Madinah. It is a vivid description-based on personal (frequently quite adventurous or funny) experience of what it means to put into practice the five pillars of Islam in even the most mundane fields of life.

Murad Wilfried Hofmann was born into a Catholic family on July 6, 1931, in Aschaffenburg, Germany, where he spent the war years. His university education began in 1950 at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. He completed his legal studies at Munich University with a doctorate in jurisprudence on " Contempt of Court by Publications under American and German Law" (1975) and his bar exam. While a research assistant for the reform of federal civil procedure he received a LL.M. degree from Harvard Law School in 1960.

From 1960 until 1994, he was a German Foreign Service officer, specializing on issues of defense and nuclear deterrence. After serving as director of information for NATO in Brussels (1983-1994), he represented Germany as her ambassador to Algeria (1987-1990) and Morocco (1990-1994). Upon his retirement the author took residence in Istanbul, the home of his Turkish wife. In 1980, he embraced Islam, performing his first, 'Umrah in 1982 and Hajj in 1992. In 1995, he published in Germany his Diary of a German Muslim, which is also available in English, French, and Arabic. When this book on Islamic doctrine, Islam: The Alternative appeared in German in 1992, the media, leftists, and feminists as a "fundamentalist" viciously attacked him. The Life of the Prophet Muhammad (A Brief History)
By M.M. Pickthall
Introduction by Khalid Yahya Blankinship

The Life of the Prophet Muhammad: A Brief History, originally an introduction for The Meaning of the Glorious Quran, is truly a gem of concision. Realistic and nonapologetic, it contains all that is most essential about the mission of the prophet. This biography is eminently suitable as an introduction to the Prophet's life for those wanting a quick look based on the earliest and most authentic Muslim sources. It truly represents what Muslims immediately recall when they think about the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall (1875-1936) was an English traveler, novelist, polemicist, and educationist who embraced Islam in 1917. His travels throughout the Muslim world formed the basis of several of his novels set in the Middle East and allowed him to become fluent in Arabic, Turkish, and Urdu. After his conversion, he served as the acting imam of the London Mosque (Notting Hill), worked for 15 years with Muslims in the Indian subcontinent as the editor of Islamic Culture. (Hyderabad, Deccan), and served as the Nizam's advisor and publisher. He wrote and published more than 25 books. Among them was his well-known work The Meaning of the Glorious Qur' an Explanatory Translation.

Science Miracles (No Sticks or Snakes)
By Dr. Adel M. A. Abbas and Anne P. Fretwell

The science references are among the many miracles of the Qur'an that this book tries to bring to "light" which when recognized, acknowledge Allah as the Creator. Allah knew that the posterity of the last Prophet would come to live in an age where scientific facts relating to man and the universe would be revealed. Hence, scientific miracles are given in the Qur'an as scientific allusions such as those referring to the universe, living organisms, time, man and natural phenomena. When the people at Prophet Muhammad's time inquired, "Why doesn't God send us miracles such as transforming a stick into snake or an ordinary hand into one that is radiant as He did during the time of Musa?" The Qur'an drew their attention to a "scientific allusion": " There is not an animal (that lives) on earth, nor a being that flies with wings, but (forms part of) communities like you". Many of these scientific allusions and linguistic miracles are illuminated in the book with succinct clarity and logical inquiry.

Dr. Abbas is a well-known consultant microbiologist in the National Health Service of England (since 1975). He has published over fifty-five books in his field. His non-medical publications include His Throne was on water (USA: amana publications, 1997) and The Secret of the 58th Chapter (England: Toth).

Mrs. Anne Patrice Fretwell has worked for 30 years in libraries and is an author of many publications. She researched this book for five years before it came for publication.

Remembrance and Prayer:
The Way of Prophet Muhammad
Muhammad al Ghazali
Translated by Yusuf Talal DeLorenzo

Shaykh Muhammad al Ghazali (1335-1416 AH/ 1917-1996 AC), the author of over fifty books on Islam, was one of the pioneers of the contemporary Islamic revival. Born in Egypt, he graduated from al Azhar University in 1360/1941 and embarked on a career of writing, lecturing, and calling people to Allah. The Shaykh's writings on contemporary ideologies and their challenges to Islam and Muslim society have been widely appreciated by Muslims all over the world. Shaykh al Ghazali served for many years in the Department of Awqaf in his native Egypt, taught at the Umm al Qura University in Makkah, and was an. Academic advisor at both Qatar University and the Islamic University of Amir 'Abd al Qadir in Algeria. Shaykh Muhammad al Ghazali passed on to the mercy of Allah on 19 Shawwal 1416 / 9 March 1996 in Saudi Arabia and was buried at al Madinah.

Remembrance and Prayer: The Way of Prophet Muhammad, was one of the first works of Shaykh al Ghazali's to be translated into English. The book describes in vivid prose how the Prophet, upon him be peace, used to remember Allah and pray to Him. Not only are the exquisitely beautiful, deeply moving and penetrating words of the Prophet given in the English translation, but in the original Arabic as well, thus allowing those desirous of memorizing Arabic access to the original texts. The intimate relationship with Allah, which was the hallmark of the Prophet's life, becomes clear and vivid. The book's contents are immensely relevant. to the life and concerns of modern man, whose life has been made barren by the present secularist machinery.

Hammudah 'Abd al 'Ati

Islam in Focus (3rd Edition)
By : Hammudah 'Abd al 'Ati

"Islam in Focus is one of the best-known and most widely distributed general introductions to Islam by a Muslim author. His Throne Was On Water
By : Dr. Adil M.A. Abbas

A fascinating synthesis of science and religion.

I have always been interested in attempts to bring science and religion together and therefore became particularly interested in HIS THRONE WAS ON WATER. This work is Dr. Abbas' intensely personal and fascinating synthesis of science and religion, the culmination of 12 years effort. Many will concur with, or be skeptical of, even disagree with parts of the book; but most will agree that it commands attention regardless of personal views.
- K.D. Barahann

This book has provided me with fascinating new insight into the religious basis of science.

With a Christian upbringing centred on the Bible, the Qur'anic references were new to me. However, clearly dissected and displayed, all appeared to be there - the interdependency of religion and science. This book has provided me with fascinating new insight into the religious basis of science. Read on to see why. For those scientists with doubts about the existence of God, read on as well.

Even Angels Asked
by Dr. Jeffrey Lang

In Even Angels Ask: A Journey to Islam in America, the author attempting to share the American convert's experience of discovering Islam. During his fifteen years of being a university professor on college campuses across the United States, he has met many young Americans of Muslim heritage who avoid or even reject Islam, being unable to reconcile their inherited faith with their acquired Western outlook. One of the principle assumptions behind this book is that even though the American culture has alienated these young people from the faith of their parents, they will be able to relate to what other Americans, of non-Muslim origin, have discovered in Islam. Talking with converts, like himself Dr. Lang found a shared common experience that approximates a characteristic path to the faith. This book takes the reader along this path by discussing conflicts between faith and reason, difficulties associated with the decision to convert to Islam, obstructions to conversion erected by Muslims themselves, the indispensable experience of Islamic rituals, extremism within the Muslim community, and what the future may hold for American Muslims.

Dr. Jeffrey Lang is currently an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Kansas. He converted to Islam in the early 1980s.

As Muslims of North America and of the English speaking world, it is time to hold fast to our names and teach ourselves and others how to transliterate and pronounce them correctly.

This book Digest of Muslim Names: Beautiful Muslim Names and Their Meaning is an updated edition of the earlier work of Muslim Names which the compiler Fatimah Suzanne Al Jafari published in 1977.

The book is an easy to use reference to the most common names, their English meaning, and the accurate way of how to transliterate them.

Islam and the Discovery of Freedom
by Rose Wilder Lane with an Introduction and Commentary by Dr. Imad Dean Ahmed

Provides scriptural and historical documentation to a leading American liberatarian writer's brilliant insight into the role of the classical Islamic civilization in establishing liberty and human rights. This highly readable book is a "must-have" for anyone interested in what Islam teaches about political, social and economic order. Non-Muslims will be astonished at the contrast between the classical Islamic society and the image of the Muslim world today. Muslim parents will especially want their high school and college-aged children to read about their heritage and its implications for the modern world. This book squarely confronts the question of what made the classical Islamic society so dynamic and productive and the role it played in the rise of modern values in the West.

Rose Wilder Lane

Born in 1886, the daughter of Almanzo and Laura Ingalls Wilder (of Little House on the Prairie fame), Rose Wilder Lane was a biographer and best selling novelist. She encouraged her mother to write the best selling Little House series about her childhood.

Above all Lane was a powerful polemicist voicing the call for human liberty. Wide recognition of her talents on that score began with her 1936 Saturday Evening Post Article, "Credo." She also knew something about Islam, having worked for the Red Cross after the First World War documenting their activities in the Balkans, Russia and the Middle East. Perhaps from that experience she gathered the insights that found their way into her chapter on the role played by Islam in establishing human liberty in her book The Discovery of Freedom: Man's Struggle Against Authority.

Although Mrs. Lane withdrew publication of The Discovery of Freedom because of her dissatisfaction with historical errors in a book which claims to have written in a white heat, this annotations and commentary in this present volume demonstrate the truth of Albert Jay Nock's observation: "When it comes to anything fundamental, Mrs. Lane never makes a mistake. She is always right.

Dr. Imad A. (Dean) Ahmad

A cum laude graduate of Harvard with a Ph.D. in astronomy and astrophysics from the University of Arizona, Imad-ed-Dean Ahmad is now President of the Minaret of Freedom Institute, an Islamic free-market think tank in the Washington, DC area. An adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University's school for Advanced International Studies and at the University of Maryland, he teaches an honors course on "Religion and Progress: Islamic Science, Politics, and Economics."

Since the mid-1980's, Dr. Ahmad has worked primarily in the area of Islamic studies, building on his lifetime interest in religion and politics.
